Solar hybrid PCU MPPT 5.5KVA technology described

The Su-vastika 5.5 kVA Solar Hybrid PCU is an MPPT-based, AI-ready power conditioning unit that runs your home on solar first, battery second and the grid only as a last resort — while updating its own software over the air and talking directly to your lithium battery’s BMS to make the battery last longer. This guide explains, in plain language, exactly how it works and why that matters.

A solar hybrid PCU (Power Conditioning Unit) is the brain of a home solar system: it combines the MPPT solar charger, the battery inverter/UPS and the grid connection into one box that decides, second by second, where your home’s power should come from. The Su-vastika 5.5 kVA model does that with a twist — it is built on a modular, microprocessor-based design that can be upgraded remotely, so it doesn’t become obsolete as battery and solar technology change.

How the Su-vastika Solar Hybrid PCU routes power: solar (orange) charges the battery and runs the home; the grid (green) only steps in when needed; AC (blue) feeds your appliances.

How the 5.5 kVA Solar Hybrid PCU works — the priority chain

The PCU follows a simple, intelligent order of priority so that you use the most solar and the least grid power:

  1. Solar → Home (first): during daylight, the panels power your appliances directly through the MPPT charger.
  2. Solar → Battery (second): any solar left over after running the home charges the battery.
  3. Battery → Home (third): when solar falls short — clouds, evening, a power cut — the battery takes over seamlessly.
  4. Grid → Home / Battery (last): the grid is used only when both solar and battery run low, so your electricity bill stays as small as possible.

Because the battery is always in the solar path, the moment it is fully charged the PCU cuts off the grid and runs the house on solar so that no free solar energy is wasted. For the full concept, see our complete Solar Hybrid PCU & MPPT guide.

MPPT charging — up to 30% more solar than a PWM controller

MPPT (Maximum Power Point Tracking) constantly adjusts the voltage and current to pull the maximum available power from your panels in any light or temperature — typically harvesting up to 30% more energy than an ordinary PWM charge controller, and charging the battery faster. Sizing panels correctly to the battery voltage is what unlocks that gain; our guide on matching solar panel voltage with battery voltage explains how.

What makes it “AI-ready”

Modular MPPT + UPS cards

The solar (MPPT) card and the inverter (UPS) card are separate boards that talk to each other over a secure UART link. This improves reliability, makes servicing easier, and — crucially — lets new features be added later through the external USB port without changing the hardware.

Talks to your lithium battery’s BMS

For the first time in India, Su-vastika links the Solar PCU directly to the lithium battery’s BMS. The PCU reads live battery data and automatically adjusts charging current, low-voltage cut-off and high-voltage set points — which extends the life of the lithium battery. See how the right inverter protects a lithium pack in our best lithium inverter in India guide.

Remote monitoring, updates & predictive savings

Through a Bluetooth/Wi-Fi dongle and a mobile app (Android & iOS), you can monitor solar generation, battery charge and load from anywhere, and the firmware updates over the air — no service engineer visit needed. After about a year of data, the app can even predict your yearly solar output and savings in advance. More on this in what is an AI-based Solar PCU and how does it work.

Digital warranty & BIS certified

The unit carries Su-vastika’s digital warranty — managed inside the PCU’s own microprocessor and activated only when the battery and panels are actually installed — and is certified by the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) for safety.

Frequently asked questions

What is a solar hybrid PCU?
A single unit that combines an MPPT solar charger, a battery inverter/UPS and a grid connection, and intelligently chooses solar, battery or grid to power your home — giving both bill savings and power-cut backup.
How is MPPT better than a PWM charge controller?
MPPT tracks the panel’s maximum power point and can harvest up to about 30% more energy, especially in low light or high temperature, and charges the battery faster.
Why does the PCU cut off the grid?
Once the battery is fully charged and solar is available, the PCU disconnects the grid and runs the home on solar so that no free solar energy is wasted.
How does BMS integration help my battery?
By reading the lithium battery’s BMS data, the PCU automatically tunes charging current and cut-off voltages to the battery’s real condition — reducing stress and extending its life.
