Understanding the BMS
A Battery Management System (BMS) is the electronic circuitry that monitors and controls the performance of a rechargeable battery pack. It’s crucial to ensure safe and efficient operation, especially in lithium-ion batteries, which are widely used in electric vehicles (EVs), energy storage systems, and portable electronics.
Critical Functions of a BMS
- Voltage Balancing: Ensures that all cells in the battery pack are charged and discharged uniformly, preventing overcharging or undercharging. This is particularly important in lithium-ion batteries, as imbalances can lead to premature ageing and reduced capacity. The voltage balancing in each cell of the Lithium battery pack is fundamental to perform as the cells are equalized with each other. Each BMS has a tolerance of measurement. Generally, it’s 5 to 10% of tolerance, but it’s important to look for the BMS, which has the lowest tolerance in reading the right values according to which it equalizes the cells with each other. cell balancing has two concepts available: Passive balancing and Active balancing. So far, the passive balancing cell equalization is more prevalent in the BMS which has the small battery pack voltages.

- Temperature Monitoring: Detects and prevents overheating or overcooling, which can lead to battery degradation or safety hazards. Lithium-ion batteries are sensitive to temperature extremes, and excessive heat or cold can shorten their lifespan. It depends how many temperature sensors are there in any particular BMS as the bigger cell pack need more temperature monitors and this will keep the Lithium battery pack safe as the role of the temperature sensor is to give command the BMS to stop charging and discharging beyond a certain temperature. At times user keep the Lithium battery in a high temperature environment at which the battery need not to be operated as it may be dangerous for the user to use at that particular temperature, so BMS cut off the battery from the use in that state which is very important for the safety parameters of the lithium battery. The BMS should have the provision of setting through the software for different temperature settings for Charging and Discharging temperatures cut off.
- State of Charge (SOC) Estimation: Accurately calculates the remaining charge in the battery pack, providing reliable information to the user or system. This is essential for managing battery usage and preventing deep discharge, which can damage the battery. The State of Charge and State of Discharge shows the battery status as how much is left for charging or how much is left for Discharging. It can be accurately telling the time left depending upon the load or it can give the right estimation of time of charging to the consumer.
- State of Health (SOH) Estimation: Assesses the overall health and performance of the battery pack, helping to predict its lifespan and maintenance needs. The BMS can provide insights into the battery’s condition by monitoring factors like cell voltage, internal resistance, and capacity.
- Undervoltage Protection for each Cell: This is a very important protection required in the BMS. The BMS monitors each cell’s voltage, and the moment the cell voltage goes below the defined cell voltage, the BMS has to switch off the battery bank for protection.
- Over Voltage Cell Protection: The preset threshold level setting in the BMS is a must for each cell voltage setting. The moment the cell voltage crosses the threshold upper level limit the BMS has to shut down with the warning.
- Safety Protection: Implements measures to prevent short circuits, overcurrent, over-voltage, and under-voltage conditions, safeguarding both the battery and the surrounding environment. These safety features are crucial for preventing thermal runaway and other hazardous events.
- Monitoring and Setting Parameters: Monitoring software through the IOT and having CAN RS485 and other communication are essential these days as the ESS and Automobile chargers will talk to the BMS to create another layer of protection. The ESS can switch on and off charging and discharging depending upon the protocol received through the BMS, which acts as a double safety layer for the Lithium battery pack.
